Is this skin lesion dangerous?

Certain skin lesions can pose a health risk. It is important to quickly identify a potentially dangerous skin change that could represent melanoma. we recognize and take appropriate action.

Melanoma is one of the most dangerous forms of skin cancer, as it can spread quickly to other parts of the body. Its incidence has been increasing in recent decades. It is a type of cancer that can affect young and old. It can appear anywhere on the body, but is more common on parts exposed to the sun, such as the face, back, arms and legs. It most often appears as a new mole or as a change in an existing one, but it can also develop on completely healthy skin.

But how can we identify those that are potentially dangerous to us among the multitude of skin changes?

It is important to know a simple rule for self-examination of the skin – the ABCDE rule .

Each letter indicates a characteristic that we should pay attention to:

  • A – Asymmetry

If we divide a birthmark in half, are the two halves different? Suspicious birthmarks often have irregular, asymmetrical shapes.

  • B – Border

Are the edges of the mole fuzzy, jagged, or uneven? Melanomas often do not have a clear border.

  • C – Color

Does the mark have multiple colors? Different shades of brown, black, bluish, red, or even white can be a sign of danger.

  • D – Diameter

Is the diameter larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)? Although melanomas can be smaller, a larger mole is often a reason to get checked out.

  • E – Evolution

Has the mole changed recently (in size, shape, color)? Any change in the mole should prompt a consultation with a dermatologist.

When to see a doctor?

If you notice one or more of the changes listed above, it is essential to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Early diagnosis of melanoma greatly increases the chances of a complete recovery.
